Donate food & other goods

Food insecurity is the reality for an estimated 42 million people in the US. Meanwhile, over 30% of our food supply is lost or wasted every year, resulting in major environmental consequences - recent data suggests that global food loss and waste represent roughly 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions

What can be done?

Donating food items to Rethink is a great way to support our commissary kitchen’s production of meals for communities impacted by food insecurity. It also serves as a sustainable method to divert excess food from landfills!

How does it work?

Rethink’s dedicated culinary and transportation teams work in resourceful and creative ways to process food donations of all kinds. Food donations are picked up 6 days per week by our drivers, and transported to our commissary kitchen where donations are utilized by our chefs in the production of approximately 8,400 meals per week that are then delivered at no cost to our CBO partners. Any food donations that can not be incorporated into meals are either made into preserves or transported directly to CBOs.

Who donates food to Rethink?

Grocers, caterers, hotels, corporate cafeterias, farms, distributors, trade shows, and more. To inquire about donating food or other goods*, please contact: sourcing@rethinkfood.org

*In addition to food items, we also accept donations of equipment, packaging materials, and other non-food items to support our commissary and transportation operations.

 Why donate?

  • 100% Liability Free

The Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Act protects all donors from liability. Rethink’s Food Donation Agreement, signed by all donors, adds an extra layer of protection.

  • Tax Deductible

Donors are entitled to receive a tax deductible in-kind gift receipt for any non-monetary donations, which can be applied for enhanced tax savings through IRC Section 170(e)(3).

  • ESG Reporting

Donors of excess food that would otherwise go to waste have the option to receive a report detailing the positive environmental impact of their donation.
